To try the best truffles dishes Istria has to offer we recommend you visit Motovun for a day. The restaurants Pod Napun and Konoba Mondo are equally best bets. Pod Napun has a magnificent terrace where you can enjoy the sunset in all its glory and Mondo is a place Anthony Bourdain fell in love with – if it was good for him …. 🙂 Make reservations at both places a few days in advance!

Closer to the Villa Lena we wholeheartedly recommend the following places to enjoy local cuisine: Konoba Klarici – home made food which they produce on the family estate or source from local farmers. Reservation is advised. This establishment does not take cards it is CASH ONLY.

Since we are in the Mediterranean seafood is inevitable. Here are some of the restaurants we have tried and can also recommend. Kod Kancelira, Fish House Rovinj and Tunaholic.

Immerse yourself in the velvety embrace of Malvasia, and let the robust character of Teran captivate your senses. Book a visit and tasting and spend a nice afternoon at these winaries: Roxanich, Fakin Winary, Kozlović, Geržinić (they also have superb Olive oil) or Kabola.

Things to see and do while in Istria

Brijuni Islands – Two thousand years ago, the Brijuni, a group of 14 islands along the west coast of Istria, were a luxurious ancient Roman estate. A hundred years ago, this was the location of the largest golf course in Europe at that time. Fifty years ago, Marshal Tito, the lifelong president of the former Yugoslavia, entertained celebrities here, including the actresses Sofia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. Dont miss the chance to visit the islands!

Morosini-Grimani Castle – The Morosini-Grimani Castle is one of the best-preserved castles on the Istrian peninsula and it is the largest edifice in Svetvinčenat, which has been a symbol of the place and destination for centuries. It is located in the picturesque town of Svetvincenat about 10min drive from the villa.

Jama Grotta – Baredine Baredine cave is a karst phenomenon, geomorphological monument of nature and the first Istrian speleological site modelled to meet tourist demands, as such open since 1995.

Pula Arena – The Pula Arena is a Roman amphitheater located in Pula, Croatia. It is the only remaining Roman amphitheater to have four side towers entirely preserved. It was constructed between 27 BC and AD 68, and is among the world’s six largest surviving Roman arenas.

Zarecki Krov – Cascade tumbling from a rocky overhang into a spacious pool, popular for swimming & picnics. Free access. 

Istralandia – for the kids (and all the youngsters at heart) the water park Istralandia offers exciting day of splashes and enjoyment.

Malo Rimsko Kazaliste (Small Roman Theater) – After more than a decade the roman theater in Pula is now restored and opened for public events. You can check the repertoire of concerts and plays and maybe catch your favourite artist

Picugi and Mordele – are known as the ‘Croatian Stonehenge in Istria and have been little explored. Get to know this phenomenon! check out the trail that will take you back to ancient mysterious place.
